People groups of Tunisia

Tunisia has a population of 9.3 million (1997). Approximately 0.001% is Christian.

Tunisia is a small but strategic country in the centre of the North African coastline. It has been conquered in the past by the Phoenicians, Vandals, Romans, Arabs, Turks and French.

The original inhabitants of North Africa were the Berbers. In Tunisia, unlike in other North African countries, the Berber languages have almost died out. The Berbers have been assimilated into the Arab culture, making theirs the most arabized country in the region. French is the predominant second language. However, Berber traditions do still have an influence on society.

In Roman times there was a large number of Christians in Tunisia, until the Arabs swept over the country in the 7th century. Islam quickly became the dominant religion and still strongly influences the mindset of Tunisians today. Over 100 years of efforts to reach Tunisians with the Gospel have borne little fruit until recently, when more have become open and are showing interest and taking steps towards finding their inheritance in Christ.

Please pray ...

  • these scriptures as the sun scorches the land, that spiritual waters will refresh and all will bloom with His love: Isaiah 35: 1-2 "The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy." Isaiah 42: 10-11 "Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea... Let the desert and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice."
  • for workers as they travel to many places, that they will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25 "A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes will himself be refreshed."
  • for the workers who have the desire to dwell in unity and love and to sort out conflicts and issues that arise, that there will be healing in relationships where needed.
  • that national believers will also walk in a spirit of love and reconciliation.
